AlitGen MaxCS Private Cloud – Windows Update Guide

This guide provides details on the options AltiGen Partners have for installing Windows Updates on their Customer’s MaxCS Private Cloud servers. The purpose of this guide is to present the multiple updating options that are available on the Windows Server platform. Windows Updates need to be performed to ensure the security and stability of the Windows Operating System. Due to the need for rebooting the systems for some updates it is the responsibility of the Partner to install all updates that are available to MaxCS Private Cloud hosted systems using one of the outlined options below.

Otherwise the screen will display your selected update option and “No updates are available.

Windows Update Options:

Install updates automatically

This option will download and install updates during the Automatic Maintenance window. The default time is set to 2am server time. This time can be changed by clicking the link: “Updates will be automatically installed during the maintenance window.” This method requires the least input from our Partners but using this option could cause the reboot to happen at an undesirable time depending of the time the update process takes. Windows may not restart the system if other users are logged in as well. You can change the local policy that will force the system to reboot whether or not users are logged in.

How to Change the Auto-Restart Policy:
1. Open Microsoft Management Console (MMC.exe).
2. Add snap-in for Group Policy (Local).
3. Browse the Tree to Local Computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Update
4. Open the "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheudled automatic updates installations" policy
5. Set the Policy to the desired "Action".
6. Close the Policy and exit MMC.

Policy Description:

Specifies that to complete a scheduled installation, Automatic Updates will wait for the computer to be restarted by any user who is logged on, instead of causing the computer to restart automatically.
If the status is set to Enabled, Automatic Updates will not restart a computer automatically during a scheduled installation if a user is logged in to the computer. Instead, Automatic Updates will notify the user to restart the computer.
Be aware that the computer needs to be restarted for the updates to take effect.
If the status is set to Disabled or Not Configured, Automatic Updates will notify the user that the computer will automatically restart in 5 minutes to complete the installation.

Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.

This option is the default option AltiGen has set on the PBX servers. We have chosen for the update to be downloaded automatically but to allow our Partners to schedule the installation of these update as restarts may be required to complete the process. We prefer this option to be selected instead of Option 3, as it allows for the server to pre-download the updates from the WSUS servers at a random interval. This reduces bandwidth utilization and allows for the updates to be readily available for our Partners to complete the installation of such updates.

Check for update but let me choose whether to download and install them.

This option does not download or install any updates to the Server without direct User input. By using this option the Partner would select “Install Updates” from the Windows Update screen and the process would begin to Download and Install the updates. This option is not-preferred by AltiGen as it increases the time that the Partner will need to spend tending to Windows Update tasks. Updates using this method can take hours instead of minutes due to needing to download the update first.
