Tech Note: Exchange Service stops or cannot be started until password is reset Problem:

Exchange service stops or cannot be started until service account password is reset.

Symptom:

Active Directory password policy may be forcing the Exchange Integration account password to expire. The next time the service attempts to start, it will fail. Windows 2000 accounts that have not been set to have the password never expire will require a password reset every 28 days.

Resolution:

In a domain, use Security Accounts Manager (SAM). Go to Accounts for Users and Groups and select the account used for Exchange Integration service. Under the Actions menu, select Modify Security Policies. Select Password Aging Policies and disable password expiration. Under Windows 2000, right click My Computer and select Manage. Expand Local Users and Groups then click Users. Double click the account that should not have password expiration and select the Password Never Expires check box.

Reason:

A service attempting to start using an expired password will fail.
